Cowrie Shell Necklace

30.00

Where do we start with the gorgeous Cowrie shell?! There are so many interesting things to say about it! You may already be aware that it is one of the oldest forms of currency in the world, but did you also know that the word 'porcelain' comes from 'porcellena' which is the old Italian word for cowrie, due to the similar translucent appearance they share? Or that the classical Chinese character for money originated from a drawing of a cowrie shell? They are also used in board games (like dice, the number thrown that land with the aperture up dictates the number 'rolled') and in divination and were even used in Europe in the recent past as a frame over which to darn socks! They are viewed as symbols of fertility, womanhood, birth, destiny and wealth and are said to give protection to travellers, particularly those travelling across the sea. They make a particularly thoughtful gift to pregnant women, those who have an interest in goddess-based spiritual beliefs and those about to set off on travels overseas, but are equally good for anyone who likes unusual shiny things! Measures approximately 1.7cm long.

Please remember with all measurements, they are approximate and will vary slightly. Also, although some of them may sound alarmingly large, these measurements are taken by placing the item on a ruler and measuring from the furthest two points so the actual form of the piece will appear more wearable and smaller than these measurements may imply.
